Five Popular Weight Loss Supplements

Natural or herbal supplements for weight loss have become very popular over the last decade. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received hundreds of reports from people who have used such products to lose weight and have lost some weight, only to return to their old habits. A large number of these people had surgery or restrictive diets after their use ended. Also, some physicians have raised questions about the safety of these products. The FDA does not regulate supplements, but only requires that they be sold with idealica farmacia labeling to assure consumers that they do not contain ingredients that are harmful.

Natural or herbal supplements for weight loss are usually those that come entirely from natural plant sources and thus claim to aid you in losing weight effectively. Occasionally they may also be known as phytochemicals or botanicals. These herbal/phytochemical supplements often contain a seal that indicates that they are “Certified Natural” and thus may carry a healthful brand name. Here is a list of some frequently used herbal weight loss supplements.

Glucan. This is one of the main ingredients in green tea extract, another weight loss supplement often used in combination with other herbal products. Green tea extract contains high concentrations of antioxidants and several studies have shown that it increases the rate at which your body burns fat. Glucan can be found in various health food stores, as well as in some supermarkets. Glucan is a very safe herb and can be taken in any form, even in the form of tablets.

Orlistat. An ingredient in several dietary supplements and the primary ingredient in Orlistat, an anti-cholesterol medication. Orlistat lowers low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels and boosts the ratio of good to bad cholesterol in your bloodstream. A number of observational studies have found that people who regularly consume orlistat-rich diets have lower rates of cardiovascular disease. However, the FDA has not approved this particular product yet and it is questionable whether it will have any beneficial effect in the long-term.

Hoodia. Several natural supplements on the market contain hoodia, a plant from South Africa. Hoodia contains natural plant chemicals that block your appetite and increase your body’s metabolism. Its most important side effect, however, may be its effect on your heart rate. In animal studies, hoodia increased heart rate up to six times faster than placebo, but the main ingredient has not been proven safe in humans.

Agathelline. The most recent weight-loss supplement, to receive FDA approval is called agathelline. Agathelline is a combination of ingredients including monosodium glutamate (MSG), guaranine, and taurine. Like Hoodia, the agency has not approved this product for use as a dietary supplement because it has not been proven to effectively reduce your weight, but some people do claim that the side effects experienced are similar to those of orlistat and/or Hoodia. However, there are no clinical trials on this product yet.
